Boat Bill of Sale

If you are buying a boat from a private party, you will need a boat Bill of Sale to finalize the transaction.  It is a legal document that confirms the transfer of ownership of the vessel from the seller to the buyer.

In many cases, the seller will be prepared with a Bill of Sale to use.   However, if one is not provided or is inadequate, I highly recommend you come prepared with a Bill of Sale template “just in case”.

At a minimum, a boat Bill of Sale should include a description of the boat, motor and trailer along with their corresponding ID numbers, the purchase price, the date of sale, and the names/contact information of the buyer and seller along with their signatures.  Some states might even require that the Bill of Sale be witnessed or notarized.  Therefore, it is best to research the requirements for your state.
